Thus far, our £3000 budget has stretched to a fine selection of British singles and a two-stroke twin or two. If you’re looking for something a little less conventional, then get yourself along to Hall Green where Veloce Ltd broke moulds, pushed envelopes and ran some entirely innovative ideas up flagpoles – resulting in the water-cooled flat-twin LE.

Although it features some interesting engineering, the LE isn’t blessed with the sort of styling which inspires everyone – but it is light, low and very easy to manoeuvre. Its odd appearance also keeps its prices down: an older restoration, now a sound runner in oily rag condition with current T&T sold for £1265 at the end of last year.

The 1954 machine pictured here had travelled 3500 miles since its last rebuild and was advertised as being in sound running order when it went to a new home in December.
