THE BLETCHLEY CIRCLE

WHY THIS SHOW EXISTS IS AN ENIGMA

Real Crime - - Home Invasion - RELEASED OUT NOW PRODUCER ITV STUDIOS AVAILABLE ON DVD Charles Ginger

Sadly, instead of letting the Bletchley codebreakers enjoy a well- earned retirement after their series one serial- killer- foiling exploits, ITV has decided to plunge back into the fray with a San Francisco reboot.

Set in the 1960s, we follow

Millie and Jean’s efforts to catch the killer responsible for murdering codebreaker Clare, who’s been relieved of her tongue and had a strange symbol etched on her palm.

While the presence of a murderer using a secret code tries to replicate the tension of the show’s predecessor, its awkward placement in the sprawling Golden City – with gratingly poor American accents – detracts from any sense of drama.

The feeling that ITV was desperate for a comeback for ( some of ) the Bletchley girls somewhere, anywhere, is inescapable, and a model that worked four years ago now feels horribly out of place. Many secrets will probably remain within the walls of Bletchley. If only ITV had been as private with this needless show.
