Friends in High Places

Did Mikhail Khachaturyan have friends high up in Moscow’s police force? people with power that were willing to cover up his mafia involvement?

Reading the Russian media on the Khachaturyan case it is astonishing how often the daughters’ allegations of sexual and physical abuse by their father are dismissed. The allegations of his involvement with the city’s mafia were also largely dismissed in online forums and discussions. Most crucially, the police themselves seemed to reject the idea of any criminal involvement by Mikhail Khachaturyan ( conveniently ignoring the heroin and weapons found in the boot of his Audi SUV) stating that, “In the period from August 2002 the police have not received a single statement about the unlawful actions of Khachaturyan.” A picture of Mikhail Khachaturyan with the ex- head of the Investigation Department of the Federal Service for Drug Control has disappeared.

The Khachaturyan sisters say that their father had close ties with the police and that there are no complaints filed against him because corrupt officers linked to Mikhail Khachaturyan would never accept any complaints.
