Room for everyone

to their nearly finished home. ‘There were still tools stored in the front room, the kitchen was almost finished but usable, and we were waiting for the joinery, including the shelves, to be completed,’ Maggie remembers.

When it came to deciding on the kitchen, she and Tom went for simple white kitchen units that wouldn’t date quickly. The units, along with plenty of glazing, help to maximise the feeling of light while the wooden flooring warms up the room. The colour blue, Maggie’s favourite, is a striking accent in each area of the new space. ‘We’d already commissioned the glass pendant lights in blue, so that’s what started the palette,’ she says. She chose coordinating metro tiles for the kitchen, a blue rug for the kids’ area and similar coloured accessories for the living zone, as well as blue pots and bluebells for the landscaped garden. A darker, richer tone in the living room creates a dramatic backdrop, while grey-blue hues evoke a calm atmosphere in the master bedroom.

The project was Maggie’s first foray into design:

‘Once the extension was finished, the rest of the house developed and I began to be a bit braver with the colours I chose,’ she adds. Now finished, the couple enjoys being at home. ‘It’s a true family space and we use it all year round,’ Maggie says. ‘I walk in the door and think, “I love it here”.’ ➤
