stay small
An extension doesn’t have to be sizeable to be successful and add all the extra living space you need. If your home has an unused passageway at the side – common in Victorian terraces and semis – this might provide all the space you need to create the kitchen-diner you’ve been hankering after. There are economies of scale when you’re extending, so the per square metre cost of a side return extension will be higher than a large addition. However, that still means your final bill for the work can be smaller, leaving you money to spend on the fit-out.
