‘Living in the most densely populated city in the UK (Portsmouth) means our garden space is limited to a small, fairly narrow space at the back of the house dominated by the kids’ playhouse, slide and various other plastic monstrosities. We decided to make this little square at the back a dedicated ‘grown up space’. My husband built the decking and we bought the garden furniture set from B&Q about four years ago. I use soft accessories like cushions, sheepskins and blankets to make it cosier but the real game-changer is the rug, which provides a warm, homely vibe. Our coffee table doubles as a storage box, so we can stash cushions and throws away on rainy days. I love the idea of taking the inside out and making the best of our space, no matter how small. I treat it like an extra living room, which is basically what it becomes during the summer months.’
