The Best Exotic Marigold... granny flats
Fearing a lonely twilight of playing bingo organised by a care home, a group of single women, all over 50, got together to build a different kind of retirement home
– one run entirely by the residents.
Decades in the making, the New Ground development, in Barnet, north London, was officially opened last year.
It is the first co-housing group set up just for older women.
Each of the 26 members has their own flat, which is bought or rented, and a communal garden that is maintained by themselves.
They have a rota for cleaning and cooking, sharing a meal once a week, and the group go on regular outings.
‘It’s a very active group,’ says Maria Brenton, who started the initiative.
‘The sense of community doesn’t just happen, and we have done a lot to create
it and sustain it.’
