If I had to compile my ultimate wish list of cover stars for Red,

Kylie would be right at the top (along with my other ultimate

Red woman, Kate Winslet).

Despite the fact she’s megawatt famous, she feels like an old friend – someone you have a history with, someone you truly care about.

I still remember, age 12, crying happy tears as Scott and Charlene walked down the aisle to Angry Anderson’s Suddenly,

then craving curls (my Clairol ‘Benders’ never really cut it) so I could recreate Kylie’s open-top-hat look from her eponymous album cover that same year. I watched her transform into a hipster hanging off Michael Hutchence’s arm, rejoiced when she declared her relationship with then-boyfriend Olivier Martinez meant croissants every day (love trumps a pert derriere) and shared the fear of the nation when she had treatment for breast cancer. So I was blown away when she chose Red as the magazine in which to celebrate the release of her new album,

Golden (her 14th!) and her 50th birthday in May. I’m happy to report she’s as glorious in person as I’d hoped – completely charming and downto-earth. Talking of incredible women, I also urge you to turn straight to page 63 for Sherlock star Amanda Abbington’s account of life after her break-up with actor Martin Freeman – it’s honest, elegant and thoughtful, much like the woman herself.
