FINDING JOY

In our July issue, we welcomed the arrival of the brilliant and inimitable columnist Dolly Alderton. Her first piece was all about finding happiness in the minutia of the everyday, and this resonated with many of you.

Lucy Elliott wrote, ‘I am currently on day two of maternity leave waiting for the birth of my second baby, after losing my first at three months old a few years ago. We are asked all the time about how we coped and how we dealt or are dealing with it, and every word Dolly has written about appreciating the small things in life on a daily basis is exactly what we do. Happiness really is appreciation of the little things and not taking them for granted.

‘I couldn’t agree more with Dolly’s advice on finding joy in the everyday, and I am delighted that today involves sitting in the garden in the sunshine, reading my Red magazine, eating a lovely lunch and waiting for my new arrival. Sadly, there’s no wine, but you can’t have everything all the time!’

Another reader, Carol Hines, agreed. ‘Having been through very difficult times, it’s the sun on my face as I walk the dog, the sand between my toes at the beach, the pleasure of making a cup of tea and savouring every sip, a long soak in the bath and a smile from a stranger that are like gold dust and should be treasured. As we travel on our journey, making memories in the now is more fulfilling than dreams for the future. Thanks, Red, my monthly inspirational read!’ Alex Plowman also felt the love.

She wrote, ‘What a delight Dolly Alderton is. Her advice to find contentment in life’s simple pleasures struck a chord with me as I am someone who frets about the future while the sublime present slips away. I love her take on life and hers will be the first page I turn to when the next edition of Red arrives – a monthly dose of pure class.’
