4 WAYS TO CREATE BETTER ONLINE CONTENT

- By Professor Paul Springer, director of the School of Communication Design, and Sophie Bishop, vlogger, researcher and lecturer at Falmouth University

1 Optimise for mobile People are more likely to view your content on their mobiles than on a tablet or laptop. So, if you have a blog, check that your posts are viewable across all devices. Also, consider how content looks on social media channels. For example, images uploaded to your Facebook timeline will be rendered to 476 pixels wide, with the width automatically scaled – so your images will need to look great in that size.

2

Think visually Your pictures, videos and infographics grab more attention than words alone. On Twitter, tag messages with images to get more engagement. When it comes to Facebook and Twitter, videos should be short and contain subtitles, as people tend to watch them without audio. Youtube videos can be slightly longer, but keep them under 10 minutes and as short as you can, making clear points with a coherent narrative.

3

Use SEO tools Make content easy to find by working out what your audience is likely to search for. For instance, a post called ‘My Weekend In Paris’ won’t get as much traffic as one titled ‘5 Amazing Things To Do On A Weekend In Paris’, even if the content is similar. To help you assess which keywords to use, find the most searched-for terms for your topic on Google Adwords. You can also get add-ons for your browser or blog platform to help with SEO– the Yoast plug-in for Wordpress is a very helpful tool.

4

Create a schedule to keep posts on track If you stop posting regularly, you run the risk of losing your audience. Use tools like Hootsuite to support scheduled tweets and posts, which let you plan ahead. But don’t just post for the sake of it – that will turn your audience off, too.
