WHEN THEY’RE FEELING DISAPPOINTED…

- BY DR GENEVIEVE VON LOB

It can be extremely hard to watch your child struggle. However, overcoming adversity is essential to shaping a child’s fast-developing brain. They need to experience setbacks, sadness and disappointment, otherwise they won’t learn to cope with their vulnerable feelings. Help them to develop problem-solving skills by encouraging them to reflect on what has happened and think through how to approach similar situations in the future. Sharing your own failings is crucial, too. By talking about situations where your actions haven’t worked out as planned, you’ll ease the pressure to achieve and help your children to understand that, in life, both failure and success are normal.
