LA JOIE DE JULIA
When Julia Restoin Roitfeld was asked to collaborate with The Outnet to create a capsule collection of little black dresses, the Parisian model had a lot of ideas to draw on. Here, she shares the inspiration behind the collection
Red meets fashion model and influencer Julia Restoin Roitfeld
I’m pretty bad at mixing colours and prints, hence I’ve got into the habit of taking a shortcut and just sticking to black,’ admits Julia Restoin Roitfeld, model, influencer and daughter of French fashion editor Carine Roitfeld. ‘Although,’ she adds, ‘I guess my “laziness” has worked in my favour and also become my style trademark.’ One look at her Instagram proves that she rarely veers away from black – but then again, why would she? ‘Black suits everyone, it can be worn morning to evening and is easier to mix with bags, shoes, etc… It’s just a minimalist approach to life, both aesthetically and functionally,’ she says.
It stands to reason, then, that The Outnet would approach her to design an exclusive collection of party-worthy pieces in her favourite shade – five dresses and one jumpsuit, that, she adds, ‘were inspired by my all-time favourite pieces that I never get bored with wearing, plus a few that I always wanted but couldn’t find anywhere’. From the ‘Minnie Mouse’ dress, which is her ‘ideal party dancing dress’ to the tuxedo suit-dress, aka her ‘power woman’ dress: ‘Perfect when you have a long day of meetings, then head straight out to a work event or dinner.’ Restoin Roitfeld has your entire social calendar covered. And for those of us who fear timeless is not exactly on trend, she says, ‘I think classic, by definition, is already cool. Trying to follow trends is the last thing I like to do because what is trendy is therefore very soon untrendy!’ We couldn’t agree more.
