YOUR CULTURE FIX
FROM ONE OF THE BEST BOOK FESTIVALS IN THE BUSINESS TO THE RETURN OF SHARON HORGAN’S HILARIOUS SITCOM, THIS MONTH’S CULTURAL CALENDAR IS AS BUSY AS IT IS BRILLIANT
FESTIVAL CHELTENHAM LITERATURE FESTIVAL
We can always rely on Cheltenham to present a stellar literary lineup, but this year it’s the 70th anniversary of the festival, so there’s no doubt it will be bigger and better than ever. For starters, it’s being guest curated by the likes of Max Porter, Tessa Hadley, Elizabeth Uviebinené and Yomi Adegoke. Meanwhile, speakers include David Nicholls, Emily Maitlis and Celeste Ng. Trust us, this is not to be missed. From 4th to 13th October; cheltenhamfestivals.com/ literature
BALLET CINDERELLA
You may have read and watched the story countless times, but the English National Ballet production is going to be a gorgeous rendition of this classic fairy tale. On stage first at Manchester Palace Theatre and then at Southampton Mayflower Theatre, this sparkling show choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon will bring the story of Cinderella to life through dance. From 17th to 26th October; ballet. org.uk
TV MOTHERLAND
Three years since the pilot first aired, this BBC Two sitcom finally returns for a second series. Last time round, we fell in love with the brilliantly unromantic take on motherhood, co-written and created by Catastrophe’s Sharon Horgan and starring Diane Morgan and Anna Maxwell Martin. This series welcomes a new mum on the block and, whether you have children or not, Motherland will make you laugh – a lot. Airs on BBC Two this October.
OPERA DON PASQUALE
London’s Royal Opera House is opening its curtains this month on a truly classical comedy opera. A domestic drama that spans two generations, Donizetti’s Don Pasquale may date back to the 1840s, but this production shows how contemporary the story remains. This cast is led by Welsh national treasure Bryn Terfel CBE, and the show is set to be enchanting. From 14th October to 2nd November; roh.org.uk
