The best decorations
Centre stage
Here, soft pink adds an unexpected freshness to classic shades of pine and berry. Along the centre of your table, group candles of different heights and shapes (look out for fir trees and pine cones), plus festive ornaments and small glass bud vases. Flowers in deep cranberry shades make a modern alternative to traditional holly. Scatter a few glittery stars across the table and keep the rest pared back – forgo a tablecloth, choose simple crockery and add plain linen napkins.
Tree traditions
What’s old is new again, so forget matchy-matchy trees in strict colour palettes this Christmas, and embrace a more traditional ‘anything goes’ ethos instead. Mix garlands with baubles, candles with candy canes, colour with metallics. If this feels too haphazard, allow yourself four different shades (perhaps red, green, gold and silver) and look for ornaments with a heritage feel, such as ceramic shapes, hand-blown glass, paper angels and tree candles.
Deck the halls
Focus on a few oversized decorations, which may be simple but will instantly transform your space. Paper stars, honeycomb balls and garlands look brilliant hung in a window or over a dining table, while a line of large white pillar candles make a statement on a mantelpiece. Create clusters on low tables, using platters of nuts or candied peel alongside candles of different heights and Nordic knick-knacks (think wooden reindeer or sparkly trees), for a witty but elegant way to entertain.
