FINCA CORTESIN
Andalucía, Spain ‘It only took 24 hours in Finca Cortesin for life to change pace. The days were quieter, goals were simpler and sleeps were longer. Attention to detail was notable; I spied a candle and matches thoughtfully placed next to the tub as I soaked in Penhaligon’s bath oil, and flowers below the bed as I lay face-down during a blissful Thai massage. I was surprised to discover there were 67 suites, because the vast courtyards, ocean views and Andalucían-inspired architecture gave the impression that I was in my own private space. The spa alone is 2,200 sq m, with a 25m sea-salt water pool (one of four!), sauna, steam and ice room. But yoga is the thing. The shiny new ARANI Yoga Center has two studios and a purpose-built garden for outdoor practice. There are classes of all styles, from Hatha to Ashtanga, as well as meditation and mat-based Pilates. I tried beginner’s Iyengar: slow and good for the back. In a guided meditation, the teacher encouraged us to slip into a place between being asleep and awake. The class was, like the hotel itself, an invitation to live a little more peacefully. And I left promising to accept it.’ Natasha Lunn
