Plan for the future.

So many families disagree on money and shareholdings, so make sure everyone is happy with what is in place. You may start a business with your sister in your 20s but, 15 years later, one of you might have children, or the other could be going through a divorce. It’s important to stipulate what happens with the business in the eventuality of these life events and be prepared for it.

Play to your strengths.

It’s important to have specific roles that do not cross over too much, as well as mutual respect for each other in what you both do. I am still in awe of my mother for her incredible hair-colouring skills, and her consistent attention to detail on the salon floor. In the same way, I know Mum completely respects what I do and the devotion I have for the business side. Ultimately, we both want the brand to grow and succeed.
