All dressed up and nowhere to go
After months at home, forget saving your new clothes for best. Here, some of Red’s favourite models show us how they’ll be wearing this season’s newest trends. A maxi dress for movie night? Why not?
Kelly in Dior
Dior’s versatile maxidress in a soft mauve (all shades of purple from lilac to lavender are ‘in’, FYI) perfectly sums up the new easy mood. With a silky silhouette and pleated skirt, it’s ideal to throw on and pad about barefoot as a more elegant option to loungewear. Add a blazer and loafers and you’re polished for the day, slip on mules and a wide belt and you’re party ready.
Ymre in Fendi
If you’re prone to exaggeration, then this is going to be your season, as tailoring takes on a new dramatic silhouette. Everything from blouses to blazers are reimagined with super-wide Eighties shoulders and theatrical oversized sleeves. Swoon over Fendi’s divine mood-boosting buttercup skirt suit, which takes a traditionally prim outfit to heavenly levels.
Caroline in Max Mara
At a time when we are all trying to consume more consciously, it’s good to hear that the cool heritage trousers you invested in last year are still big news for winter. How to style them with a new-season twist? Give them a Seventies nonchalance with slim-fit knits in retro brown, pointy-collared shirts and knee-high boots. See, you’re so winter 2020 already and you didn’t even have to go shopping.
Sandra in Prada
If there was one trend that swept over all the catwalks from Paul Smith to Prada, it was belting. Everywhere you looked, from bulky quilted overcoats to sleek blazers, silky dresses and soft slouchy sweaters, they were cinching and pinching everything in. If you do one thing, dust off those belts and embrace the new silhouette.
Charlotte in Marina Rinaldi x Antonio Berardi
Luxury Italian label Marina Rinaldi has collaborated with internationally renowned designer Antonio Berardi to bring us an exciting winter collection of chic knits, sophisticated feminine tailoring and – the ultimate wardrobe must-have – a breezy romantic chiffon maxidress. For something more daytime-appropriate, layer a chunky rollneck over the top and add western-style ankle boots.
Tyvanni in Chanel
Sometimes, it’s the small details in an outfit that set a new fashion mood. This winter, the focus is on starchy white collars and crisp white cuffs, adding a puritan modesty to your plain black wardrobe. Layer neat Peter Pan or bib styles under a black sweater and let scalloped-edge cuffs peep from the sleeves of a slimline maxidress.
Simone in Emporio Armani
You’ll be very happy to hear that black is officially back. Yes, okay, we know you’ve been wearing it all this time anyway, but up until now, it’s been seen as the safe option. This winter’s black is anything but in opulent velvet, luxurious lace and with pretty embellishment. A simple black dress gets a Hepburn edge with a flirty fit-and-flare silhouette, while a black jacket feels playful with the addition of a floppy pussy-bow tie. The message is clear: do black, but please don’t do boring.
Annelot in Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini
With a swoosh of its silky tassels, this eclectic new party dress swings on to the scene with the look of a Forties vintage heirloom – it comes in rich floral velvets and opulent metallics and has the attitude of a Seventies disco diva. Worn with stompy boots and a cascade of corsages, it demands to be seen, but until that’s possible, wear it to put out the bins.
Shan in Tod’s
In line with winter’s preppy wave, hemlines are rising and tunic dresses, skirts and coats (preferably shearling, if you’re asking) all come thigh-skimmingly short. Not for everyone, of course, but if you’re game, keep your footwear flat and try ribbed wool tights in shades of college grey.
Anne in Bottega Veneta
The new ‘it’ dress is a knit dress; a one-piece wonder that has the ease and comfort of a simple sweater, but the finish and feel of a fabulously on-trend outfit that you can wear for all seasons and all scenarios.
Charlotte in Louis Vuitton
With every new season, a new jacket style takes the spotlight. Right now, it’s the turn of the souped-up bomber. Embellished and in shiny colour-pop satin or motorcycle leather, it has a hi-tech sporty feel. Zip yours over everything from a plain white T-shirt to an elaborate ruffle shirt and it will become your wear every day, everywhere jacket, adding some serious attitude to your wardrobe.
Traditional upholstery-style fabrics are giving a regal decadence to everything from suiting to evening wear. Go for palatial drawing-room tones of olive green, burgundy and gold or softer Louis XVI silvery pastels with chessboard checks for some extra glinting gorgeousness.
