When talking about conflict specifically, Alison advises asking yourself, ‘Is this a conversation I need to have right now?’ If not, take advantage of that, and plan out what you want to say. Practise and rehearse it, either to yourself or role play with someone else. It sounds ridiculous, but it’ll take the emotion out of it.
