CRYSTAL CLEAR

While a set of baskets might make sense in one room, more functional pieces will be better elsewhere. In the bathroom, keep beauty products in see-through boxes, tubs and jars labelled with their contents; try the range at Lakeland.

BOX CLEVER

Items you don’t need on an everyday basis can be put away in a cupboard. Buy storage boxes that blend into the space; Ikea and The Holding Company have good ranges. The longer we hold on to things, though, the more reluctant we can be to throw them away. Look in the boxes every few months and ask yourself whether you really need each item.

For the pieces you do keep, maintain order by storing them in a more efficient way. Don’t be afraid of bringing in new items if they will genuinely help you to stay organised; consider these functional pieces as an investment in your daily routine. Dividers for the wardrobe that section off the rail into trousers and dresses, for example, create order, while decanting pasta, rice and cereals into Kilner-style jars in the kitchen will clear the space of bulky packaging. If you need new furniture, try multifunctional pieces such as a coffee table with storage.

A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING

The kitchen is one of the best places to declutter, as you’ll feel the benefits immediately. It’ll also make shopping more intuitive: if you have clearly labelled jars of staples, you’ll know what’s running out. Keep the most-used items at eye level, and place lesser-used items higher up. But don’t leave them to gather dust; if you haven’t opened a cookbook or used the breadmaker in over a year, do you really need it?
