MOTHERS TO ONE ANOTHER

In our April issue, Nadia Owusu wrote about how her aunties taught her the true meaning of family.

‘I have many “mothers”, whose support, love and guidance have provided me with stability and the strength to get through difficult times,’ she wrote. This resonated with reader Anna Foote, who wrote to us:

‘Nadia Owusu’s beautiful piece on what it means to have a mother figure in your life couldn’t have come at a better time for me. I have lost both of my parents, my mum when I was 18, and sitting down to read the article on Mother’s Day was the enlightenment and comfort I needed on a day that is traditionally very hard for me. My mum was a wonderful and selfless woman, and when I lost her, it felt like I’d lost the anchor that grounded me and kept me on the right path. It felt like I’d never get it back. You only get one mum and mine was gone. But Nadia’s writing reminded me that those qualities we associate with a mother, of being a nurturing, supportive, kind and guiding influence, do not have to solely come from a biological source. I have a very different background to Nadia and, sadly, I’m not as close to my extended family as she is, but I am incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by other positive and strong female role models in my life. Extraordinary women who share their wisdom and warmth with me every day; who push me to be brave and to find the strength in myself when it feels too hard to carry on.

If to mother is to nurture and guide, there’s no reason we cannot be mothers to one another and ourselves. Thank you Red and Nadia for some much-needed light on a difficult day.’

LOVE FOR BILLIE PIPER

We received a flurry of responses to our cover star’s interview with Anna Bonet. ‘The wonderfully euphoric article on Billie Piper was like the nectar of the gods to me,’ wrote Marie Maher. ‘I’ve always loved and empathised with Billie on her phoenix-like rise from the ashes of her depressed self, to the gloriously happy lady I could see in your article.’ Natalie Ahmed got in touch, too. ‘Billie’s right when she says the have-it-all culture is an unhelpful message,’ she wrote. ‘I just want to celebrate what I already have. And why should we celebrate simply being content, without feeling we need to strive for more? In the wise words of Billie: “because we want to”.’ Be part of the Red community Follow us on Instagram @redmagazine 124k followers Tweet us @Redmagdaily 100.5k followers Like us on Facebook at Red Magazine 164k likes Follow our pins at Red Magazine 862k followers Read more at redonline.co.uk
