LOST PROPERTY CURIO COLLECTION, ST PAUL’S
Literally a stone’s throw from St Paul’s Cathedral is the newly built Lost Property Curio Collection by Hilton. Its appearance from the outside is understated in comparison to the towering grandeur of St Paul’s, but don’t let this fool you. The first thing you see, on stepping into the hotel’s elegant lobby, is a rainbow of hand-blown Murano glass lights. (I’m later informed these one-off pieces were specially commissioned.) There are other equally striking design details – the hotel’s website suggests its decor ‘evokes the lost arts and activities of eccentric living with a plethora of curiosities around every corner’ and this is true – the walls are lined with art depicting London scenes. A fascinating stone-carved wall sculpture behind the reception desk portrays moments in history through the ages, interspersed with some of Winston Churchill’s most famous quotes.
Our room is cosy and inviting, with muted panelled walls, herringbone flooring and a beautiful marble en suite. The curiosities continue, with a complimentary box of ‘forgotten’ toiletries, including all the essentials. The room is peaceful, perfect for those on a business trip who might want to catch up on some work, or those just wanting to take the weight off after a day exploring.
The restaurant, Found, has low lighting, soft leather seats and a marble-topped bar, creating a sophisticated ambience. It offers fresh produce from local markets, so we order the succulent seared scallops, lobster pasta and roasted duck. The wine is heavenly, and the service impeccable.
In the heart of the city, Lost Property is near many tourist attractions. Just a 15-minute walk over the Millennium Bridge is the Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe theatre and the Bankside Gallery. We opt for cocktails and live jazz before heading back to our hotel, delighted not to be running for the last train home.
After a restful sleep on the softest pillows I’ve ever slept on, we make a leisurely way down to breakfast. Over a stack of pancakes, we remark on how this hotel has managed to carve out an identity in an already oversubscribed area. Find it among the high rises and you’ll discover a unique offering worthy of its buzz. JENNA SELBY ROOMS FROM £170 A NIGHT. HILTON.COM/EN/HOTELS/LONCCQQ-LOST-PROPERTY-ST-PAULS-LONDON
