By the summer of 1993, SNK had started to establish the fighting game specialism for which it would become famous. Fatal Fury was already up to its second game, with a revised special edition in the works, and Art Of Fighting was also doing good business. This was the background against which Samurai Shodown emerged, and it quickly found favour thanks to its tense, high-damage bouts and historical theme. The game proved to be a huge hit and was quickly ported to the major home consoles and handhelds of the day, with the first of many sequels following in 1994.
