Ridge Racer V
Namco’s arcade racer came in for some harsh criticism back in 2000, largely because it failed to revolutionise the Ridge Racer formula. With the benefit of hindsight, it’s easy to see that major changes would have been an attempt to fix something that wasn’t broken – the handling is satisfying and the track design is excellent. It’s also an attractive early game for the system
(though the lack of anti-aliasing leaves it with a jagged look), and the hardedged electronic soundtrack fits the game’s aesthetic well. Just avoid the
PAL version if you can, since there’s no
60Hz option.
