The Mega Drive’s graphics hardware can scroll individual parts of a single layer at different speeds. This can be used to create all kinds of unique effects – racing games use it for curves in the road, Street Fighter II uses it to add perspective to the ground, Sonic 2 simulates additional background layers and Rocket Knight Adventures uses it for heat distortion.
