MORE CLASSIC KIRBY’S ADVENTURE MOMENTS

-

Boss Rush

While each boss and miniboss clearly has strategies for how to beat them, the sheer variety of Kirby’s copy abilities means there are always alternate methods depending on which power you brought to the party. Whether it’s skipping attack cycles and making short work of bosses with fireballs, weaving around otherwise tricky attacks in your nimble UFO, or even spitting your power-up star at an enemy to steal a clutch win.

Spikes? Really?

There are a few moments in Kirby’s Adventure where you encounter a screen which looks somewhat perilous… or at least it would be for any other platform hero. Then you remember that you’re Kirby, and simply puff yourself up and float right on past any hazards. It’s actually really cunning game design – your expectations and experience from other games will sometimes trick you into thinking things are a lot more difficult than they actually are.

Art Attack

More games should open with a lesson on how to draw the main character, ideally some where the hero isn’t so painfully easy to draw in the first place. Still, this charming intro sets the tone for the rest of the game – Kirby and his world are more dripping in character than should be possible on 8-bit hardware. There’s a lovely callback to the intro on the pause screen too, with Kirby trying to draw himself in the bottom corner. And failing. Come on, Kirby.

Minigame Mayhem

One of the great things about the game is just how well it keeps you guessing. Not only do different powers alter how you need to approach levels, but you never know what’s going to be hidden behind the doors you unlock by clearing those stages, either. It might be a weird arcade crane game where you rescue Kirbies for 1-Ups, it could be an arena battle, or you might even find yourself having eggs and bombs chucked at you by that no-good King Dedede.
