Yu Suzuki wasn’t the only one to claim a Golden Joystick this year
As well as recognition for Yu Suzuki’s pioneering career, there was plenty of representation for retro releases at this year’s show. Castlevania Anniversary Collection was nominated for Xbox Game Of
The Year, but fell to eventual winner Gears 5. Tetris Effect was nominated for Playstation Game Of The Year, but lost out to double award winner Days Gone, and also picked up nominations for Best Audio and Best VR/AR Game. Tetris 99 also picked up two nominations, being beaten to Nintendo Game Of The Year by the nostalgia-packed Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Sega’s Mega Drive Mini was nominated alongside the Nintendo Switch Lite and Oculus Quest in the Best Gaming Hardware category, but lost out to Nvidia’s RTX 20 series of PC graphics cards.
The big winners of the night were Capcom. As well as taking home the Best Visual Design award for Devil May Cry 5, the developer scored the night’s only other double win with Resident Evil 2. This year’s remake of the 1998 zombie horror game picked up the Best Audio award (doubtless for Mr X’s terrifying footsteps), and also won Ultimate Game Of The Year. That’s the first time a remake has ever won this award!
