THE RETROBATES
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE ATARI GAME?
DARRAN JONES
I, Robot, Missile Command and Tempest, so anything touched by Dave Theurer. What a genius.
Expertise: Juggling a gorgeous wife, two beautiful daughters and an awardwinning magazine, all under one roof!
Currently playing: Cathedral
Favourite game of all time: Strider
ANDY SALTER
One of the earliest games I remember playing in the arcade is Battlezone, it was well ahead of its time.
Expertise: Modding games, no ‘vanilla’ versions for me, thanks!
Currently modding: RTR: Imperium Surrectum
Favourite game of all time: Rome: Total War although I guess it’s the Remastered edition now.
GRAEME MASON
I love the beautiful simplicity of Asteroids, and it still looks super cool even today.
Expertise: Adjusting the tape azimuth with a screwdriver
Currently playing: Bioshock Infinite
Favourite game of all time: Resident Evil 4
TIM EMPEY
Super Sprint was really good fun in the arcades –spinning those massive wheels.
Expertise: Finishing Game Pass games before they go
Currently playing: Return To Monkey Island
Favourite game of all time: God Hand
PAUL DRURY
Being told to pick one Atari game is like being asked to choose a favourite child – I love so many of its coin-ops from the golden age of arcades but if forced, I will have to choose the beautiful and timeless Asteroids.
Expertise: Nolan’s hot tub
Currently playing: Overboard!
Favourite game of all time: Sheep In Space
RORY MILNE
The first game I ever played was Tempest. Even though I was barely tall enough to see the screen it absolutely blew my mind. Decades later it’s still my favourite.
Expertise: The game that I’m writing about at the time of writing
Currently playing: Turrican
Favourite game of all time: Tempest
NICK THORPE
It has to be Warlords. Get four players together and it’s carnage, and I’d happily put it up against any more modern multiplayer game in a heartbeat.
Expertise: Owning five Master Systems and a Mark III
Currently playing: Gears Of War
Favourite game of all time: Sonic The Hedgehog
IAIN LEE
Permission to be vaguely controversial. I had more fun playing the Atari version of Pac-man than I did any other Atari game. I was about nine. I didn’t know it was no good and an awful port. Many, many happy hours.
Expertise: Buying expensive stuff on ebay then never touching it
Currently playing: Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare II
Favourite game of all time: Elite (BBC Model B)
PAUL ROSE
I’m going really old-school and saying Combat, as the first Atari game I remember playing. The noise when you died was brutal!
Expertise: Winging it
Currently playing: The Otherside
Favourite game of all time: Half-life 2
