Mario’s first 3D adventure remains a staggering achievemen­t, both in its meticulous game design and how it influenced countless other videogames. While its 3D camera can feel a little archaic by today’s exacting standards, it was leaps and bounds ahead of those found in many other 3D games of the time. A missionbas­ed structure immediatel­y separated Super Mario 64 from its peers, while its hub-like approach to exploring Peach’s castle would also creep into many other games, platformer­s and otherwise. Perhaps the biggest impact Nintendo’s game offered over everything else though was the sheer sense of joy that came from experienci­ng Mario’s fluid movement in his new 3D world.
