Mario’s first 3D adventure remains a staggering achievement, both in its meticulous game design and how it influenced countless other videogames. While its 3D camera can feel a little archaic by today’s exacting standards, it was leaps and bounds ahead of those found in many other 3D games of the time. A missionbased structure immediately separated Super Mario 64 from its peers, while its hub-like approach to exploring Peach’s castle would also creep into many other games, platformers and otherwise. Perhaps the biggest impact Nintendo’s game offered over everything else though was the sheer sense of joy that came from experiencing Mario’s fluid movement in his new 3D world.
