RIDE’S month in bikes
New 765cc engine S, R and RS versions Prices start at £8000
TRIUMPH’S STREET TRIPLE range expands for 2017 with three all-new models, replacing the popular street bike that was built around the Daytona 675 engine and chassis. The new Street Triple uses a 765cc bored-and-stroked Daytona engine and power levels increase as you move up the range from S to R and RS.
The entry-level model is the 111bhp Street Triple S, which will cost £8000. The Street Triple R will have more sophisticated suspension, a slipper clutch and a 116bhp tune on the three-cyclinder engine. The range will be topped by the RS, which will have Öhlins suspension, Brembo brakes and 121bhp. There will also be a low version of the S model, with different shock, forks and a sculpted seat lowering the seat height by 30mm to just 780mm.
The Street Triple is dripping with technology. There’s an all-new, full-colour dash, which gains features as you move up the model range, navigated by a ‘joystick’ on the left-hand bar. The Euro-4compliant bike uses a ride-bywire throttle, with road and rain riding modes on the S. The R gains sport and a rider-programmable mode, the RS aslo has a track mode. All the bikes have traction control and ABS, with the RS enjoying a quickshifter.
The look of the new Street Triple is similar to that of the older model, but the tail is higher for a more aggressive look, floating above a sexy gullwing swingarm.
“Making the new Street Triple 765cc gives a lovely balance between performance and a light, agile package,” explains Triumph’s chief engineer Stuart Wood. “The three models have their own focus but they’re all really good for road riding. It’s all about choice so the S, R and RS give buyers so many options – especially with the low-seat model.”
Prices for the R and RS will be announced next month. Get the May issue of RIDE for a first ride on the new Street Triple.
