The C4 is the ultimate flip-front helmet from high-end German firm Schuberth. It comes with built-in speakers, microphone and Bluetooth antenna so all you need to do is plug in the Sena Bluteooth communications system (£189.99 for standard, £284.99 for advanced). The C4 is the quietest helmet of its kind and offers a huge field of vision through its ultra-wide visor as well as including a drop-down sun visor. The lightweight shell is made from a glass fibre composite and the helmet comes with a five-year warranty. There’s also a sophisticated ventilation system and removable and washable lining.

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

Flip-front helmets offer the best of both worlds as they have the protection of a full-face helmet but also the practicalities of an open-face lid. Simply flip the front up so you can easily speak to people or munch a chocolate bar - and you won’t have to remove your lid every time you stop for petrol.

COMMUNICATIONS

Many helmets now come ready to accept Bluetooth communications systems so you can make and receive phone calls, listen to music, get satnav directions, or chat to your pillion while on the move. Comms systems are sold separately.

LIFESPAN

Most manufacturers recommend changing your helmet every five years, even if it’s never been dropped or crashed, because the resins inside decay over time so the helmet becomes less protective. If you drop a helmet from hand height onto hard concrete or crash in it, you should change it straight away.

APERTURES

Obviously vision is hugely important when you’re on a motorcycle so choose a visor with a wide aperture that allows you to use your peripheral vision as well as being able to see straight ahead. Try a few on to see which is best for you.

SIZE MATTERS

One manufacturer’s version of ‘large’ can differ from another’s so it’s best to try before you buy if at all possible, rather than relying on sizes alone.
