Comeback What is the law?
Buy from a dealer or trader and it should be made clear what your warranty is. It may be ‘three months engine and gearbox’ on cheaper bikes. It may cover more, on a sliding scale, depending on age. Get a printed copy so you know what’s covered. If you have any issues after buying remember to remain calm and polite – you’re much less likely to get anything resolved if you start shouting the odds.
If you buy privately you’ve much less, if any, comeback. Even if it is advertised incorrectly you would have to start (and fund) a civil legal case to retrieve your money. You’ll also need to pay for an independent engineer’s report, so keep all communication and a copy of the original advert in case it goes as far as a judge. Buying privately can save money, but the pitfalls are many. Always remember: ‘Buyer beware’.
