The tourer: Kawasaki 1400GTR

Rich, 43, has owned his 1400GTR for seven years and 80,000 miles

AFTER A BLAST on the roads around Andover, Rich’s smile is wide: “I like it. I’m impressed with its power delivery; it’s forgiving and stable at low speed and then suddenly it hits. I thought I’d be fighting a more aggressive, heavier beast but it’s well executed. The riding position is far more sportsbike but it’s not heavy on the wrists — you lean forward but it’s not forcing you. It’s not as loud as I thought it would be — it doesn’t sound yobbish! No issues with the throttle — it’s very smooth; there’s nothing rough about the bike. Not sure if it’s a tourer though — I prefer the seat, high bars and screen of the GTR. Even getting a tankbag on it is tricky but it comes with a centrestand. So yes, it’s impressive and beautifully engineered but I’m not sure if I’d want to spend a week and 2000 miles on it.”
