Big sights
Sometimes a ride needs a target, a destination to aim for — something to provide a bit of structure and a sense of achievement. If you’re just plucking places out of a hat, the Millau Viaduct in the Tarn region of southern France is pretty much hitting the jackpot. But what other French landmarks are worth building a trip around? Here are our five favourites:
1 Gorges de Verdon
In the mountains of Provence is France’s Grand Canyon: an unforgettable ride
2 Carcassonne
The pristine Medieval citadel is easily explored in a relaxed afternoon spent off the bikes.
3 Mont St Michel
Swap your bike boots for walking boots to explore this fabulous fortified monastery.
4 Rocamadour
Fascinating town (and huge church, naturally) carved into a cliff.
5 Thiepval
A more sombre – but more accessible – sight is the British memorial in the Somme.
