Q So — should I buy a new R1250GS?
Given the chassis, electronics and ergonomics of the new R1250GS are largely the same as the previous R1200GS, it makes the decision to upgrade slightly more straightforward. The new motor is a definitive progression — every rider will notice it and it’s unlikely any GS owner will feel it lacking, in terms of performance, to its predecessor. It has more, of everything, everywhere but is totally faithful to the classic GS style of power delivery. You will not be lacking bottom end, midrange, or top end, or feeling more vibes.
However, it is pretty much the only upgrade; the TFT dash is now standard, the calipers are different, Hill-hold Control has improved performance and the ABS now won’t permit an open throttle on the brakes. If you need that in your life, or if you’re coming to the end of a PCP deal, you might as well upgrade. If you’ve bought a new R1200GS since 2014, you might not feel the need just yet — especially if you want to wait and see how reliable Shiftcam turns out to be.
But owners of older GSS will definitely appreciate the new level of performance from the R1250GS, as well as the other improvements, especially to suspension. And for that reason, I would caution against a test ride on the new R1250GS unless you’re genuinely in a position to buy one. It’s that good.
