TCX Clima Surround Gore-tex boots £249.99
www.tcxboots.com THESE TOURING BOOTS claim to provide maximum breathability while still being completely waterproof. This magic trick is down to the use of something new to motorcycle boots (though already used in other types of footwear, such as hiking and mountaineering), called Gore-tex Surround.
As well as having the waterproof membrane built in to the boot, the Clima has been designed — in a partnership between TCX and Gore-tex itself — for as much airflow as possible. Most of the upper is made from Cordura, a breathable mesh fabric, rather than leather or synthetic microfibre. Additional airflow comes from the dozen rectangular holes adorning the sides of each boot’s sole — not something you might expect to find on a waterproof boot. These slots feed a dedicated, ventilated grid built into the sole, whose air channels are there to keep your feet cool. Sweaty socks, be gone with you…
So, two questions: despite all the extra venting, are they still waterproof? During their first month’s use, yes, completely. And, secondly, are they noticeably more breathable? Definitely — if anything, a bit too cool for January. A pair of thick socks improves the insulation enough that they’re comfortable down to 0°C, but overall these feel more like they’ve been designed as three-season boots.
Comfort is fantastic straight out the box — they’re not stiff, with no bulky plastic panels and no convoluted ‘closure system’. There’s one short zip and a large Velcro flap, meaning they take just seconds to put on.
Protection isn’t obvious to the eye, but they are reinforced at the shin, ankle, heel and toes, and are CE certified. As something that’s designed to keep your feet dry and happy irrespective of whatever conditions you come across on that summer tour, these feel ideal.
Waterproof, breathable, comfortable Not cheap, chilly in winter
