How we tested them

-

CAPACITY We created a two-night away kit, of a pair of trainers, two T-shirts and a hoodie, two sets of underwear, spare base layers, a pair of jeans and a washbag. We checked to see if each of the bags would accommodate the kit, which they all did though there was a big difference in how easy it was to load and access.

WATERPROOFING We filled each bag with the same collection of beach towels, to ensure consistent loads. We fixed them to the rear seat of our long-term KTM 790 Adventure R and hit them with a pressure washer for a set period of time to see if they allowed any water in. Marks were deducted for water entering the main body as well as external pockets.

EASE OF USE We looked at how easy each bag was to load and then, access the contents once loaded. We also considered how they were fixed to the bike and how that would affect quick removal when stopping at services en route, for example.

We looked at how easy they would be to carry off the bike, such as into a hotel.

FEATURES A quick look at the additional features, like mesh pockets for wet gloves, for example.

QUALITY We carried out a visual appraisal of the perceived quality of each roll-bag, looking at the material used, the methods of construction and the quality of zips, fasteners and linings.

STABILITY We fitted each of the bags to the pillion seat of the 790 Adventure R and used the fixings supplied to see how stable each bag was in use. Where fixings were not supplied, we used a pair of ROK bungee straps to fit the bag to the seat.
