Britain’s cheapest (decent) riding kit

At £400, is it any good?

- Blackstock Words Jim

WE ALL KNOW that a laminate jacket-and-trouser suit costing north of £2000 is likely to be pretty good. We all know that a full-face helmet weighing in at more than £600 is going to protect you. We all know that a pair of gloves costing £200 will do the job. Or at least it should…

But what about kit that achieves exactly the same safety standards on paper but costs a fraction of the money? We’re not talking about cheap — and potentially dangerous — knockoffs bought online but proper, branded products backed up by the relevant safety testing standards being sold by reputable companies right now.

There’s plenty of it around and you don’t have to look too hard to find it. But while their spec and ratings on paper might be up to the levels we demand, what about comfort? Ease of use? Real-world performance?

We’ve assembled what we believe is the UK’S cheapest full riding outfit that is available from proper suppliers in all sizes and hits high enough standards that we would happily ride in it all day, every day. The big question is — is it good value or is it just cheap?
