What to look for on the test ride

-

Unless you’ve ridden a 1200 RT before, be aware BMW’S boxer-twin tourer is a big old beast that needs some getting used to, so take your time.

Before the off, familiarise yourself with its spec, equipment and any options and use the ride as an opportunity to check that it all works correctly.

Also inspect closely for any corrosion, especially on alloy surfaces such as at the front of the engine, the Telelever stanchions and around the shaft housing and wheel.

The gearchange in the lower cogs is clunky, especially when cold, so don’t be alarmed. Be suspicious of any clutch slip — it’s an expensive fix.

On the move, be sure to check for known electrical faults — fuel gauge (pre-’10), indicator switch etc. If ESA is fitted, check it works correctly, ditto heated grips/ seats and electric screen.

Suspect handling may indicate worn rear-wheel bearings, a common fault and another expensive fix. Check for any oil leaks on your return, particularly around the shaftdrive housing and sight window.
