Q What do RIDE readers think?

Two Speed Triple 1050-loving readers try out the new 1200

- What’s good? What’s good?

‘The new ST’S not for me — it’s too aggressive’

“That engine is incredible; so much faster than the 1050 and the gearbox is slick. I really like the quickshifter too. I like the chassis feeling ; in bends it’s light and easy to turn and I like the new riding position.”

Not keen on?

“Initially I really didn’t like the feel of the brakes; they are so sharp. The throttle’s lighter than mine, but is a bit snatchy. The motor lacks the low-down grunt of mine and the relaxed character — it’s just too aggressive. The suspension is harsh but I am sure there is a bit of compliance to be found through set-up.”

Are you convinced?

“No, the Speed Triple isn’t a sportsbike. It lacks the vibration, sound and soul of a Speed Triple. It’s a great bike, just not for me.” Would you buy it?

“No. I have an R1 and a ZX-9R as well and I don’t want to feel the need to be riding fast everywhere; that’s not why I bought a Speed Triple.”

‘I love the 1200’s new sporty attitude’

“I love the engine, it’s so much fun and I like the smoothness. Its handling feels lighter and more responsive than my bike, you can feel the weight difference. The wider bars are helpful to lever the bike into bends.”

Not keen on?

“I don’t like the throttle’s feeling, it is quite snatchy, and I miss the sound of my bike. The brakes are also quite sharp; after a while I think they would be ok but they are quite aggressive.”

Are you convinced?

“Yes, I like the sporty ride, responsiveness and the new engine. It is very different to my Speed

Triple but I like its new sporty attitude, lower weight and smaller feel. It isn’t perfect but I do like it.” Would you buy it?

“Yes. I am a Speed Triple fan and like the extra performance from both the engine and chassis with the 1200 makes everything more effortless. But It needs a louder exhaust!”
