LINCS LOOPY

BEST FOR Back-road scratching AREA Lincolnshire and the Wolds LENGTH 110 miles, B1183, B1125, B1202, B1190, B1191, B1189, B1188, B1395 SCENERY CHALLENGE

Lincolnshire Wolds and the flat Fenland area to their west, reaching across to Lincoln, are laced with some outstanding B-road action. And, although the Wolds are pretty, the rest of the ride isn’t exactly blessed with sweeping panoramas — which is exactly what we might want for a relatively deserted ride, free of tourists clogging up the roads. On a Sunday afternoon on Bardney bends, you’re more likely to meet fellow riders enjoying the slightly ropey tarmac from nearby Willingham Woods biker meet than other vehicles.

The B-road route starts north of Boston on the drain-straight run up to

Revesby, where it hits higher ground and winds entertainingly up to Horncastle — an early coffee in the town will be welcome. Then it’s a quick dash on the A158 before taking the B1125 Caistor High Road, flowing north across the western edge of the Wolds — it’s got some epic sections, but is often frequented by camera vans on its northern end and gets used as a rat-run by a fair bit of HGV traffic headed for Humberside airport.

At Caistor, another A-road, the A46, runs into Market Rasen, and we pick up the B1202 heading to Wragby, then on to Bardney and its eponymous bends. The B1190 boogies back to Horncastle where the B1191 shoots west again, rolling through Woodhall Spa with its 1940s High Street. You can get a good pasty at the deli...

Next it’s onto a short loop around Methringham on some cracking tarmac with delightfully-teasing complex bends, before back on the B1395 to hook up with the A17 just west of Boston.
