How are they different?

1 PORTABILITY

The Gear Gremlin kit is similar in size to a thick paperback and should fit under the seat of older bikes or in a pannier or ruckie of modern ones. The Motul P3 can holds 300ml of product under pressure and as a result, is around the size of a large can of deodorant. Not massive and also should fit under the seat of older bikes or easily in a pannier or a rucksack

2 USABILITY

The Gear Gremlin requires a fair bit of effort to make a repair, including reaming the hole out, inserting the plug, trimming it then reinflating the tyre. The Motul product, on the other hand, seems to be simplicity itself to use; simply connect the end of the flexi pipe to the tyre’s valve and hit the button; the product and internal pressure do the rest

3 RANGE

The Gear Gremlin instructions stipulate the kit can be used for repairs to a maximum of 6mm/¼in in size and not within 6mm/¼in of the tyre's sidewall. It also stipulates a maximum speed of 40mph but no actual maximum distance, though it does say the kit should be used to; “Get you home or to the nearest garage where a professional repair or replacement can be carried out”. The Motul can says it; “allows driving hundreds of miles before definitive repair” and does not specify a maximum speed

4 INFLATION

The Gear Gremlin kit comes with three vials of CO2 gas and a connector system to use the compressed gas to reinflate the tyre once the repair is complete. The Motul can contains gas under pressure that not only carries the product itself into the tyre but also, reinflates it so that you can continue your journey

5 REPEAT USE

The Gear Gremlin comes with a pack of five repair cords so theoretically, it could be used to repair five punctures though you would need more CO2 canisters to reinflate the tyres. Once the can of Motul product has been applied, it clearly cannot be reused and should be disposed of appropriately

6 TYRE REPAIRABILITY

The Motul can states; “Formula does not alter latex inner tube or tyre”, suggesting the product can be removed and a professional repair carried out though some tyre fitters won't entertain the prospect of repairing a tyre that has had this kind of product in it. Assuming the damage is where a professional repair is possible (central tread section, max 6mm diametre hole) then the Gear Gremlin plug is easy to remove for a proper repair

7 TYPES OF TYRES

The Motul product states it can be used on tubed or tubeless tyres, as long as the inner tube is not torn and the tyre is not off the rim (for tubed tyres). The Gear Gremlin system is appropriate for use on tubeless tyres only, repairing holes in the outer carcass of the tyre

8 EFFECT ON RIDING

Other than a very slight imbalance, which is unlikely to be felt, neither product should have an appreciable effect on how the bike rides and handles, as long as the appropriate guidelines are followed and each does in fact provide an airtight repair
