Q Is it really a proper sports tourer?

-

After the disappointment of the previous GSX-S model, a certain degree of scepticism about the GT’S ability to do what is asked of it is to be expected. However, the new model is chalk and cheese when compared to the old version.

At the heart of the GT is the updated inline four motor, which really suits a sports-touring guise. Undeniably not as smooth or refined as the Ninja’s engine, it feels a bit raw and tends to sound like it is working hard when it isn’t (70mph equates to 5000rpm in top) but has stacks of instant drive.

Happily pulling top gear from just 20mph, it is wonderful for roll-on overtakes and the gearbox is sublime, making the quickshifter seem a very worthy addition as it in no way detracts from the experience. The throttle response is direct but not snatchy and the (terribly named...) power modes can quickly calm it down if you desire.

When it comes to corners, the chassis is agile enough to be enjoyed and (fairly poor OE Dunlop Roadsport 2 tyres aside...) it doesn’t feel long or sluggish to respond while remaining stable at all times over bumps. The brakes are typically Suzuki wooden in their feel and the suspension is a touch firm (annoyingly the shock lacks a remote preload adjuster) but if you like a bit of sporting attitude in your sports tourer, it’s not an issue and can be adjusted out if necessary. Can you tour on one? Yes.

Comfort for the rider or pillion isn’t in question on the GT and a tank range of around the 200-mile mark is bang on what most riders would expect. However, so is a topbox, which is noticeably missing from the accessories list.

There are a few tingles from the motor but nothing too intrusive and you have to hand it to Suzuki for adding a sat-nav function to the dash, which should be obvious on a tourer but is lacking on some rival models. Comfortable, able to be equipped with luggage (but sadly the load limits are quite low), packing cruise control and a joy in the bends — yes, the GSX-S1000GT can most certainly be classed as a sports tourer.
