Examining the beliefs of other people on air

- STEVE COOKE steve@aata.me

EVERY Thursday afternoon, between 2pm and 4pm, Rochdale’s Vibe internet radio is broadcasting a new radio show, Tenzin Dasal Julie Kelly’s Let’s Talk Spiritualty.

I caught up with her to find out more and she said: “It is an interactive show that can be accessed through the website and Facebook.

“It goes out around the world. We have live music and unsigned artists from Rochdale and anywhere in the world can send in their mp3s to be played during the programme.

“Recently an Indian person sent in a recording of instrumental music which I was able to share on the show.”

Julie wants people to ‘come into the studio and speak about their faith, their belief systems’.

She is keen to emphasise that by spirituality she is not talking just about religion, but about what drives people, what their belief systems are and how they work for them.

She wants the show to demonstrate how we can make links around the world and provide an opportunity for people to better understand each other’s beliefs.

She added: “We have a weekly debate, such as the existence of God.

“I got in touch with different faith groups and recently I had the Rev Mark Coleman talking about what it is like to be a Christian in the 21st century.

“Before that I had a Muslim talking about Islam, it really opened my eyes, there was a lot I didn’t know about Islam.”

Julie’s show is already gaining a strong following of people from all faiths, along with those with a more secular take.

What they have in common is a desire to find out more, to gain a better understanding of what helps people get through their lives.

As she says: “Somewhere out there, there is someone who needs what somebody has got to offer in terms of comfort and compassion.”

Julie is looking for people to come forward who have had spiritual experiences and also wants to hear from people such as reiki and mindfulness practitioners.

She explained: “I am not going down the conventional route. I want to give people a chance to talk about the weird and the wonderful.

“If anybody wants to debate, I am ready for it. I want people to start thinking rather than sitting in front of the box.”
