Hamer aces give all in busy month

-

SIX young boxers from the very busy Hamer Amateur Boxing Club have competed in six competitive boxing shows in the space of just one month.

First out was 13-year-old Abdul Khan who made the two hour journey to Darlaston Hall, in the Midlands to beat Hamza Ali of Walsall Wood ABC by unanimous decision.

Also on the same bill was 10-year-old Allana Shaw, who was boxing for Hamer for the very first time.

She fought a Skills Bout against Shannon Cheesewright, of Darlaston Boxing Club. In a Skills Bout there are no winners, but had there been, the bout would have surely gone to the Hamer lass after she floored her opponent on two occasions with a powerful right hand during the bout.

A week later, Hamer were on the road once again when they travelled to the Labour Club in Llandudno, Wales with three boxers competing against Welsh opposition.

First on was 10-year-old Laurence Price who put in a terrific performance when boxing for the famous Rochdale Boxing Club for the first time in a Skills Bout against Liam Williams of Dyffryn ABC.

Price showed grit and determination as he listened and followed through with everything his corner told him to do and had the bout gone to a decision, he would surely had taken it.

Next on was 14-year-old Grant Kershaw, who lost in a very close encounter against the local lad Elio Algieri of Dyffryn ABC.

The third Hamer boxer to compete was Abdul Khan who met and beat Harry Williams of Shotton ABC by split-decision.

Khan was in action again when he travelled to Beechwood Workingman’s Club, Seacroft, Leeds to meet Lewis Walker of Harrogate ABC and he lost by splitdecision in a very close contest against the Yorkshire regional champion.

The next boxer to compete was 14-yearold Aeron Maddocks, who also lost to the much heavier Dan Brown of Sale West ABC at the Masonic Hall, Dukinfield.

On the same bill was Kershaw, who competed in a nodecision Skills Bout against Austin Hornsby.

The Hamer team then travelled to two different shows in one evening last weekend.

The first show was held at Lowton Civic Hall, Leigh where 14-year-old Shahruf Ali lost a very close decision to the local favorite, Will Hewitt of Leigh ABC.

The second show was held at the Wythenshawe Forum, where Maddocks was in action again, against the local boxer Kieran McDaid of Jimmy Egans Boxing Academy.

Maddocks had lost to his opponent in a previous contest but this time he left nothing to chance as he won every round convincingly to take the bout by unanimous decision.

Hamer head coach Steven Connellan said: “I cannot compliment these young boxers enough. I am really proud of them whether they win or lose.

“They always show a great attitude and a unique determination and never shy away from competition.

“I can honestly say that even when our boxers lose, their opponents always know that they have been in a tough contest and that is a great compliment.”
