THE stock car racing heritage of Rochdale will be celebrated at Milnrow and Newhey Carnival.

The event, now in its 49th year, takes place on June 24 with a parade setting off from Haugh Lane at 1pm and then a summer fate at Milnrow Memorial Park.

And this year the British Stockport Car Drivers Association will enter around 10 of its vehicles in the parade and they will also be displayed at the fete.

In the seventies, Rochdale was famous for its stock car races which were held on the site where Morrisons at Kingsway is now based. The borough is also the home of stock car legend and six times world champion Stuart Smith.

Milnrow Brass Band will lead the parade, which will also feature Milnrow PreSchool Playgroup, whose theme will be Alice in Wonderland and who are celebrating their 50th anniversary.

The route of the parade will take in Huddersfield Road, Newhey Road, Station Road and Dale Street before it arrives at Milnrow Memorial Park.

At the park there will be live music from Soul City Sound, a funfair, a shootout with Milnrow Junior Football Club, paintballing, crazy golf, stalls and crafts.

Organisers of the carnival have joined forces with recently launched business Mighty Balloons, to help decorate the event.

Springhill Hospice is the chosen charity for this year and 2018.

Paul Kettle, carnival chairman, said: “We are proud to raise valuable funds for such a fantastic charity which touches the lives of so many in our local community.

“Last year we had a record number of entries in the parade and it was thoroughly enjoyable day. Despite the rain the sense of camaraderie and goodwill was evident.

“This year’s theme is ‘Once upon a time, bring your stories to life’ and trophies will be awarded to the best groups or individuals.

“We’re extremely grateful to the many businesses in Milnrow and Newhey providing raffle prizes and donations and to Graham Poole Transport, Minky and M J May Transport for their support.

“Thanks also to Capture Design in Milnrow who designed some wonderful posters to promote the event.”
