Thank you to such wonderful people

-

ON Saturday, May 20 I was walking my dog at eight in the evening when I tripped and fell, hitting my head on the pavement.

At the time I was on Bridge Bank Road, here in Smithy Bridge. I am 80 years old and slightly disabled so was unable to get up without help.

As I lay there I called for help and immediately several people came out of their houses and gave me much-needed assistance.

Such neighbourliness undoubtedly made the situation bearable.

One of the helpers rushed round the corner to my house and told my worried wife what had happened.

Here again the neighbours came to the aid of my wife and I and drove us back to the house. Once home my wife called for an ambulance because I had a rapidly bruising eye and forehead.

It arrived shortly after and the paramedics dealt with me in a very friendly and professional manner and decided that I ought to go to A&E at Oldham.

Once again the treatment I was given was superb and I was given a bed in the observation ward for a couple of days to see if there was any lasting problems.

Luckily for me there seems to be none.

I am writing this letter to make a public ‘thank you’ to all the neighbours and the medical professionals who came to my assistance that night. And of course my wife. I am truly lucky to be living amongst such wonderful people and I thank you all for your assistance that night and your continuing concern.

As for the NHS they are beyond price and we must fight to prevent it being privatised.

Just imagine the costs I would face in countries like the USA without expensive insurance. Roger Sargent Smithy Bridge

TIME TO HELP OUR CAUSE?

WE’D like to invite your readers to catch up with their family, friends, colleagues and neighbours over a cuppa and a slice of cake this summer and help raise money to make sure no one has to face the devastation of meningitis alone.

Our Time 4 Tea events raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of the disease and funds to fight back against it.

Meningitis affects around 9,000 people across the UK each year and can have a significant impact on family members and friends too.

At Meningitis Now we’re working towards a future where no one in the UK loses their life to meningitis and everyone affected gets the support they need. We do this by funding research into vaccines and prevention, raising awareness so people know what to look for and what action to take if they suspect meningitis and rebuilding futures by providing dedicated support to people living with the impact of the disease.

Time 4 Tea is you can be held it whenever and wherever suits you best – at home, at work, at school – and, if baking isn’t your cup of tea, try Time 4 Breakfast; Time 4 Champagne or Time 4 BBQs.

Every cuppa you pour moves us closer to our goal. And we have everything you need including recipes, bunting and invitations in the free event pack on our website at meningitisnow. org/support-us/allevents/time-4-tea. Joanne Wilson Meningitis Now
