Queensway trio battle way to gold

-

QUEENSWAY aces Joe Crawford, Ibrahim Nadim and Muavia Nasim all secured gold medals in an event which attracted over 350 boxers internationally.

Fighting Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the lads had their work cut out for them.

First up was Joe Crawford who was up against a very strong lad, Louai Ali from O’Dells gym.

Louai was this year’s novice champion and a kid the coaches had been keeping an eye on. It was a very good bout with both boxers having success.

However, Crawford was cleaner in his work and used his jab effectively enough to take the win and first gold of the weekend for the team.

Next up was Ibrahim Nadim. He was up against another top prospect in Conner Kelsal, who he had met five times before coming into the fight with Nadim 3-2 going into the competition.

With Kelsal trailing he started strong, looking to even things up. But he was met in the middle of the ring by Nadim, whose engine is outstanding.

It was pretty much back and forth for the first two rounds and still quite close going into the third. As the bell went, Nadim stepped and the gas and never came off it, proving too much for his opponent. It was another unanimous decision for Queensway and gold number two.

Last out was Muavia Nasim looking to get the treble. He was up against Kamrun Sullivan. The coaches had done their homework on Sullivan who had 50-plus fights coming in and knew he was going to be strong.

Round 1 saw Sullivan trying to rush Muavia. However, the Queensway boxer used that to his advantage spinning him off and making him miss, countering and taking back the centre of the ring.

Round 2 was the same but Sullivan was getting more frustrated at this point playing into the hands of the Queensway boxer.

Going in to third, Mavi was two up and got a little bit complacent and started to trade with Sullivan and let the crowd get the better of him, making the round a lot closer than the previous two. With all three judges going with Nasim it was the dream end to the weekend with three gold medals.
