Storms cause disruption
STORMS caused travel disruption on the Metrolink.
On Thursday morning services were delayed on the Rochdale line due to an overhanging tree near to Milnrow station.
Metrolink tweeted: “Apologies to passengers travelling on the Rochdale line, there are some minor delays this is due to an overhanging tree branch near to the Metrolink overhead line.”
It came after heavy rain battered the region on Wednesday and followed Met Office and Environment Agency weather and flood warnings.
Flood alerts were issued for those living in the upper and lower River Irwell catchments, which includes Rochdale.
Speaking on Wednesday the Environment Agency said: “Heavy rainfall is forecast in the Upper River Irwell area from late afternoon today until tomorrow morning. Current forecasts suggest that there will be flooding to low lying land and roads close to the river from the early hours on the October 5. We expect the river to remain high throughout the evening, with levels peaking between 2am and 5am.
“Levels will remain high through to tomorrow morning though no flooding to properties is forecast and warnings are not expected to be issued. Take care near the areas of concern and monitor your local weather conditions.”
Environment Agency staff were also in Rochdale on Thursday morning clearing debris which had fallen in the River Roch.
The EA tweeted: “#TeamEA out in the #Rochdale area clearing debris brought down by last night’s heavy rain and strong winds to ensure river flow.”
