Hamer boys turn on skills at show

-

HAMER Amateur Boxing Club started the new calendar year with saw two new recruits trading leather for the first time when competing on the Macauley Moran Memorial Boxing Show at St Kent’s Irish Social Club on Saturday 30th September.

The first to step into the ring was the Hamer prospect, 10-year-old ‘Champagne Charlie Braddock who met Bode Hall of Stockport College Boxing Club.

Both youngsters were competing in a skills bout in which no contestant gains the decision, yet both competitors showed great skills and fantastic determination to open up what was to be a terrific afternoon of boxing.

Both boxers began the first round by using their jabs and it was plain to see that both had been schooled well in their respective gyms as they used good footwork to move around the ring while throwing fast and accurate lead hand punches to both the head and body.

In round two Braddock immediately showed his intent when he landed a crunching right hand to the jaw of Hall.

The Stockport boxer came back with fast one, two punch combinations and Braddock used the ring to stay out of distance before stepping back into range to off load his own punches.

At one point Braddock had his opponent on the ropes and he unleashed fast combinations before stepping out of range to make Hall miss, then he moved back into range to unload solid punches to the body.

In the third and final round both boxers were allowed to show the paying public their repertoire of punches, under the watchful eye of the referee and Braddock began by continuing to land strong hooks to the body as both boxers punches.

Braddock landed a sright hook to the body and Hall cringed and bent over in pain, leaving the referee to administer a standing eight count and on the sound of the last bell both contestants continued to trade leather.

Next on for Hamer was traded fast 12-year-old Samyan ‘Sammy’ Khan who met Hemedan Rostam of Moss Side Fire Station Boxing Club in yet another skills bout that saw both boxers use their long and rangy jabs to try and establish a foothold in the contest.

The bout was evenly matched and each contestant landed crisp one, two combinations as they moved around the ring.

Before the start of round three Sammy was told by his coach Steven Connellan to keep his punches long and use his jab to keep his opponent off balance before throwing combinations.

Khan followed the instructions well as he kept his opponent at bay for most of the round.

Hamer coach Alan Bacon said: “Both boxers will learn a great deal from these contests. Both are coming along well and if they keep improving as they are then maybe we might be looking at another future champion for Hamer.”
