Good weekend for Boro boxers

-

LITTLEBOROUGH Boxing Club had an enjoyable few days as two out of three boxers were victorious over the course of the weekend.

The father and son duo of head coach Mark Oldham and his son Rhys Oldham kicked things off when they went over to Horwich for a skills bout, with the Littleborough boxer putting in a nice performance for the home crowd and coming away from the venue readying his first open bout.

Next up on Saturday saw Joseph Vaughan fight in the semi-finals of the National Championships in Croxteth, Liverpool and it was a close encounter with both Vaughan and his opponent showing why they have advanced so far into the competition.

Both boxers knew they were top four in the country and made the bout that bit more special, and there wasn’t much between the pair with Vaughan narrowly losing by split decision.

The final fight of the weekend saw Kai Whitehead travel to Carrington to fight an opponent from Salford Boxing Club.

Whitehead knew he had a hard fight in front of him, however he flew out of his corner and trapped his opponent in the corner landing combination punches one other.

In fairness to his Salford opponent, he looked to counter at every opportunity and as soon as Whitehead stepped off him, he flew back at Kai looking to reply on his work.

All three rounds were non-stop trades with Kai being the stronger and at after the times looking like he was about to stop his opponent, but it went the distance with Kai getting the unanimous victory.

Head coach Mark Oldham said: “It’s been a long week in terms of travelling and being out with the lads but keeping them active is important as it’s how they develop.”
